Day 20 | Cross Stitch – 1st Day of Production
Today was the day that Tony and I have anxiously been waiting for ever since Movement 121 was launched — The day of production launch! (Tony, you’re here in spirit). The day began with Shavez praying over the business and the day. Three CROSS STITCH (the entrepreneurial arm of CATALYST) team members worked on the first messenger bag and ID Wallet. The process was deliberately slow to establish best practice techniques and fine-tune the sewing machine to accommodate our heavy thread and stitching pattern. What I observed was a team of highly skilled and dedicated craftspeople performing a variety of accurate techniques and tasks in pattern making, material and leather cutting, gluing, and stitching.

As I watched, I was deeply moved at the reality of a vision born 16 months ago in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya. It was a vision where high-end, fashionable products would be made by people from the poorest areas of the world (the marginalized many) and purchased by the highly resourced (fortunate few) in United States. The purchase (an investment!) would be the catalyst to provide sustainable life change. Though Movement121 was legally started in August 2011, today is really birth day!
Thanks to all who have supported us to this pivotal point and shared the dream. –Brad
